Gorgias or Zendesk on Shopify: How to Choose

When Zendesk beats Gorgias for a Shopify brand and when it doesn't: four questions to sort it, plus Intercom, Front and what moving takes.

A customer writes in: "I moved last week. Can you send my order to the new address?" On a Shopify store, that one ticket holds the whole helpdesk decision in miniature. In one tool the agent opens the order, edits the address and replies from the same screen. In the other, what the agent can do depends on which marketplace app you installed and how someone configured it.

That gap explains most of the distance between Gorgias and Zendesk for a Shopify brand. It isn't the whole story, though. Zendesk is the better product for a specific kind of company, and picking Gorgias anyway is an expensive mistake. Here is how we sort the two, where Intercom and Front fit, and what to check before you sit through a single sales demo.

Start with the shape of your business

Both feature lists are long and overlap almost entirely, so comparing them line by line tells you very little. The company that will use the tool tells you more. Four questions do most of the sorting:

QuestionIf yesIf no
Do your orders live in Shopify?Gorgias starts aheadLook at Zendesk or Intercom
Do several brands share one support team, each with its own help center and rules?Zendesk starts aheadNo effect
Do you sell to businesses, with accounts, contracts and several buyers per account?Zendesk starts aheadNo effect
Will a compliance or procurement team audit your helpdesk?Zendesk starts aheadNo effect

A DTC brand on Shopify with one storefront, consumer buyers and no audit pressure lands on Gorgias almost every time. Each yes in the last three rows makes Zendesk worth a serious look.

One more filter comes before either tool. Below roughly €2M in GMV, a full helpdesk is usually more than you need. A shared inbox and a good FAQ page will carry you until volume says otherwise.

The same ticket in both tools

In Gorgias, the Shopify integration is part of the core product. The ticket opens with the customer's orders beside it: what they bought, what they've spent, where each parcel is. Without leaving the ticket, the agent can edit the shipping address, cancel or refund the order, or create a discount code. Those changes write straight back to Shopify.

In Zendesk, Shopify data arrives through an app installed from the Zendesk Marketplace. It shows order details in the ticket sidebar, and what else it can do depends on the app and how it's set up. That makes one more integration to maintain, with its own settings and someone who owns it when it stops syncing.

The difference adds up over thousands of tickets. Gorgias assumes the order sits at the center of every conversation. Zendesk treats it as one data source among many. For a store where most tickets are about an order, that assumption sets the pace of your whole team.

When Zendesk is the right call

Comparisons written by Gorgias partners tend to skip this part. In these cases we'd tell a brand to go with Zendesk.

Several brands, one team. Zendesk treats multibrand as a core feature, with separate help centers, support addresses and rules per brand inside one account. For a portfolio of stores with distinct identities, that structure comes ready.

Business customers. Zendesk models organizations: companies with many requesters, shared ticket visibility and account-level fields. A wholesale arm or a B2B portal fits that model naturally. Gorgias is built around the individual shopper.

Layered routing and SLAs. When the right agent depends on language, skill, customer tier and contract terms all at once, Zendesk's skills-based routing and SLA policies give you more room. Gorgias covers assignment and SLAs well for a typical DTC team, with less depth for logic stacked several levels high.

Audits. If enterprise procurement or a regulator will review your support stack, Zendesk's audit log and compliance documentation are made for that conversation.

If one of these is central to how you operate, and will still be in two years, start your evaluation with Zendesk.

Where Gorgias pulls ahead on Shopify

An AI Agent that acts on orders. Gorgias's AI Agent can do more than reply. Inside rules you set, it can change a shipping address or cancel an order and then close the ticket. On accounts our team has configured properly, the median is 50-60% of repeat tickets handled by the AI Agent. In any demo, ask to see an action run on a real order.

Pre-sale chat that sells. Gorgias's Shopping Assistant answers product questions before purchase, such as sizing, stock or which variant suits, and guides the shopper to the product page. For a fashion or beauty brand those questions arrive in volume, and each one has a sale riding on it.

Pricing that follows tickets. Gorgias bills mainly by ticket volume. Zendesk bills per agent seat, with plan tiers and paid add-ons. Neither is cheaper by default. Ticket-based pricing tends to favor a small team working high volume, and seat-based pricing a large team handling fewer, harder cases. Model your own numbers in both before you compare quotes.

Time to go live. Our team's Gorgias implementations take 4-8 weeks depending on scope. Connecting Shopify is the quick part; most of the time goes into rules, macros and the AI Agent's guidance.

Intercom and Front, briefly

Intercom grew up serving software companies, and its data model shows it: users, companies, product events. Its AI agent, Fin, is among the strongest on the market. For a Shopify brand the question is how much order context reaches the agent without extra integration work. Test that on your own store before the demo wins you over.

Front began as a shared inbox and is still at its best there, with collaborative email, clear assignment and internal comments. A small team on light volume will enjoy it. A support team running SLAs across several channels usually needs a helpdesk built for that job.

Already on Zendesk?

Then the real question is whether moving is worth the disruption.

Moving makes sense when none of the four Zendesk signals above applies to you and your agents spend their day jumping between the helpdesk and the Shopify admin. Hold off if you're about to launch a second brand or a wholesale channel, because you'd be leaving the tool built for where you're heading.

If you do move, most of the work is rebuilding: macros, rules, views and help center articles, plus bringing ticket history across so agents can still read past conversations. We plan these projects at 4-8 weeks with a fixed cutover date agreed up front, and the old helpdesk stays readable for a while after the switch. The migration service page has the details, and our Zendesk to Gorgias migration plan goes through it step by step.

The route we'd steer you away from is a do-it-yourself migration run by an ops team that also has to answer tickets that week. Something gives, and it's usually the customers.

Before your first demo

Answer these first, then ask each vendor to demo your scenarios.

  1. Where do your orders live today, and where will they live after your next replatform or market launch?
  2. Which five ticket types make up most of your volume? Run each one through both tools.
  3. Do you have, or plan, a second brand or a B2B channel?
  4. How many agents answer tickets, in which languages and time zones?
  5. What share of your inbound questions comes before purchase? If nobody knows, find out first. It changes how much the Shopping Assistant matters to you.

If your answers line up with Gorgias, choose Gorgias. If they point at Zendesk, choose Zendesk, and don't let any partner talk you out of it, us included.
